As I read the readers’ comments copied and pasted below in response to the article in the Trinidad & Tobago Express of May 14, 2101, entitled:
“Job hunt ends in death. Missing woman found dead. by Gyasi Gonzales, I feel the same frustration as those who conclude that not enough was or is being done to solve the case. I began feeling this way when the newspapers reported a while back that her relatives were not getting the support that they needed. I am remembering another case in particular, the case of Sally Lobai who also went missing last year February after attending a job interview. As one reader commented, I do not think it advisable in this climate to allow any young woman to attend interviews unaccompanied by a trusted adult.
Since it does not seem likely that Michelle Samaroo went into the forest and committed suicide, this is now a murder investigation and also a robbery investigation. According to the article, the police were reluctant to release details “because they did not want to put Samaroo’s life in danger.” Well, thanks to person(s) walking free, Michelle Samaroo no longer requires our sheltering silence. It is time to talk.
Here are the details as they have been presented to us by the daily newspapers including all contradicting details. They are followed by readers’ comments in response to the T&T Express article mentioned above – Job hunt ends in death. Missing woman found dead. By Gyasi Gonzales |Trinidad & Tobago Express |

TIMELINE
2010-April-26-Monday –
–12:00 noon – Twenty-two year-old Michelle Samaroo of Kelly Street, Peytonville, Arima, left her grandmother’s home to travel to Arouca to visit an unidentified placement agency. She was wearing a brown long-sleeved shirt, a pair of blue jeans and carrying a black handbag. She was in the process of applying for a job on a cruise ship having responded to an advertisement , her sister believes an ad in the Trinidad & Tobago Express newspaper, for a job on a cruise ship.
Michelle interacted with an unidentified female employee at this agency. Her aunt, Mary Paltoo, had accompanied Michelle on three previous occasions to the employment agency at Arouca. However, she did not accompany Michelle on this fourth and last occasion because the employment agent at the agency had told Michelle that the visit was simply to collect her letter. On that visit, Michelle was said to be carrying $5,000.00 in cash to secure either the services of the agency and/or the job. Michelle was also scheduled for a job-related medical examination that day at an unidentified clinic by an unidentified doctor.
–4:00 p.m. – Her family began to be concerned over the delay in her return home. They tried calling her phone. On one occasion a male voice answered and said that it was not Michelle’s phone. The phone was then switched off.
The family attempted to make a missing person report but were ignored by Arouca police, eventually having more success with the more receptive officers from the La Horquetta station.
2010-April-27-Tuesday – Family members visited the office of the placement agency in Arouca hoping to discover the whereabouts of their relative. An unidentified woman, the owner according to the family, told them that Michelle had failed the medical exam, her payment had been refunded and she had left their office.
2010-April-29-Thursday – Family members continued to comb the Arouca area and were told by an unidentified source that Michelle Samaroo was last seen boarding a maxi-taxi.
2010-May-2-Sunday – Michelle Samaroo’s photograph was carried to Chaguanas, where the United National Congress was hosting its rally. Missing person flyers were distributed in a desperate attempt to make her situation known to as wide a public as possible as no one seemed willing to help the lost young woman.
2010-May-3-Monday – Michelle’s sister, visited a Digicel outlet, trying to get a list of calls made from her sister’s cellphone. She revisited the cruise ship office and discovered that the sign has been taken down and the owner was unavailable. The landlord reported that the occupier had packed up and left.
2010-May-12-Wednesday – Two weeks after her disappearance, Michelle Samaroo’s corpse was found around 3:00 p.m. in some bushes in a forested area of Surrey Village, Lopinot. Her body was so badly decomposed it could not be immediately ascertained how she had died. The DMO viewed the body and ordered its removal to the Forensic Sciences Centre in St James, for a post mortem.
2010-May-14-Friday – Two daily newspapers eventually reported the discovery of Michelle Samaroo’s body. The Trinidad & Tobago Express revealed that a senior officer at the Arouca station, who did not want to be named, said apart from questioning the owner/manager of the job-placement firm, they had detained two other people during their investigation. He said they had to keep the investigation quiet because they did not want to put Michelle Samaroo’s life in danger. All those detained were released within days, as there was no solid evidence against any of them. The Trinidad & Tobago’s Newsday also reported that Michelle was believed to have been abducted, sexually assaulted, murdered and her body dumped where it was found. This newspaper also reported that according to her relatives, it remained unclear whether Michelle had ever reached the Arouca office where she was supposed to make the payment. This conflicted with the earlier statement reportedly made to them by the agent that Michelle had in fact visited the office, had failed the medical exam, her payment had been refunded and she had left their office.

Job Hunt Ends In Death Posted: 2010-05-14 3:38:00 PM By Peeved, United States
Most likely there was no cruise ship job. This predator put the ad in the newspaper to make it look legitimate and also because he knew that some unsuspecting person would respond to it. So unfortunate for this young woman. Hope the killer(s) is caught soon….
Job Haunting Posted: 2010-05-14 11:27:00 AM By Trini
Here is a decent young lady trying to be independant and I’m sure she was excited to start the job and to help her family also, and someone who has no care for human life destroyed a family.People be careful of people that promise you jobs and you’ll giving them money.

To the family: know that there is a God and He cares and He knows how you are feeling. Remember that this life is not it. You would meet her again. Put God first and you’ll never come in second.

I am so saddened by this news of this young woman death, that I cannot eat! All i keep thinking about is her final moments of her life. I can imagine her begging her killers to spare her life, I also pray for this girl`s family I am sure that her mother is in a mess right now. God does not sleep , so is a matter of time for the killers to be brought to justice. My own consolation is election when citizens have a change to change the unfairness of the justice system, use your vote and take a stand and make a change!!

Mr. Manning all these deaths, over 3,000 since in office on your watch. You have to answer to the Lord my friend. You are the present leader of this country.Makes me wonder what is going through the electorate minds when they read these stories.Human lives under the Manning’s administration is dog cheap.Dogs are more protected than humans in T&T.How long before we can see some change.
She paid $5000 for a visa and a medical Posted: 2010-05-14 05:53:00 AM By limetree
People out there looking for jobs, no legitimate company asks for money up front for expenses. This job placement company sounds very shady. I am so very sorry for this young woman’s life being taken. My sympathies to her family and friends. This is what life is like in Trinidad now you cannot go anywhere alone anymore, not shopping or for a job interview. Maybe if someone had accompanied her she would still be alive. I won’t even bother to comment on the non performing police we have to put up with in this country.

I personally know the family and I knew how hard they worked to find her. They posted lots of pictures around the neighbourhood and throughout the surrounding areas. It is really unfortunate to know that when there is a missing person, the only time they appear in the front page, is when they die. My sympathy goes out to the family

Arouca Police again!!!! Posted: 2010-05-14 07:45:00 AM By Robert Wright, Trinidad and Tobago
Years ago, a relative of mine was stalked by her ex boyfriend. During one of the many reports to Arouca an officer said to me “ent that is your family in-law. What is the big fuss about?.” The Stalker would later go on to rape 3 women, kill another and commit several robbries. Thank God my relative was not hurt and with the help of the not yet COP Trevor Paul the guy was held. Maybe that Station is too close to the rumshop!

My condolence to the family of the young lady. Something about that job placement firm not sounding right, especially the part about returning the money to that unfortunate young lady and having to pay for a visa, the police have to dig a little deeper at that firm. I hope they catch those bastards that are responsible.

Job hunt ends in death Posted: 2010-05-14 09:35:00 AM By Cherie, United States
This is so sad. Why did this lovely young lady have to die? My deepest condolences to her family and friends. It seems to me that this firm is exploiting innocent people requesting that someone who is unemployed pay $5,000 for a visa and medical. As far as I know, only a country’s embassy can approve and grant a visa. One should never have to pay any money up front when applying for a job. This is ridiculous. The police should start investigating the firm. Who knows if they returned her money. Maybe they didn’t want to and there was some kind of a confrontation and now this poor child is dead. What an awful tragedy. So sorry.

Some of these trinidadian Cops do not care about anybody, its the uniform and what it represents, thats why they are rich Cops busy doing brisk business. Look at the crime on your island the majority of it is drug related.

To die so young, this is Trinidad, and because of that, I know deep down she was probably raped and then killed. Why? Because she wanted a job? Because she was too pretty for her own good? Because she wasn’t rich enough to afford her own transport? It tears me up to see how people are killed like this, at the end of the day, this country’s still a crappy third world island where we really don’t have a right to anything, especially the right to live in peace and safety..
I am ASHAMED to be called a Trinidadian.. Posted: 2010-05-14 04:49:00 AM By Very ashamed Trini
This country can’t even guarantee the security of its people, women are killed and raped at the whim. That and that alone tells me that as a nation we have achieved nothing if we can’t even guarantee the security of our children. I am ashamed today to be a Trinidadian.

Job hunt ended in death Posted: 2010-05-14 08:43:00 AM By acreese
Whoever killed her knew she had the money. Who else works in that agency? Either someone close to the agency did it. Is it possible also that she became frustrated and spoke about the situation in the taxi and the driver/passengers lured her into the forest? This young woman never got back home. She put up a fight and was killed, and her money taken from her. What a beauty, what a shame! AC,MD

T&T PLEASE NO MORE MURDERS !!! Posted: 2010-05-13 10:18:00 PM By Enough is Enough
Come on people of T&T, please open your eyes and see what is going on in our once peaceful nation. If on the heels of Election, the PNM can’t even keep the murder rate down, what do you think would happen if Mr. Manning and his party were to go back in government come May 24th? This young murdered girl, Michelle Samaroo could have been your sister, or close relative. She is one of the thousands that have been deprived a good life. Is this what you want again for the next five years? Trinidad and Tobago is the number one country in the world for crime based on per capital. Please think about your life, your children lives and the lives of the thousands we have lost due to the Patrick Manning government and their neglect to enforce strict measures against crime. Please vote for change on Election day, vote the People’s Partnership. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Tragic ending to a short life. Howenver, determination of cause of death is the job of the medical examiner, not the police.

It is the same old story when the police is involved. Tehy are not interested, wait too long, use wrong tactics etc. is this part of the nations PNM inheritance. Like all other crimes inthe nation, this will not be solved. No proff as to weather she really recieved her money etc. How could this agency take 5000 from her before detrrming if she qualifies. They sound bogus and should be questioned thorouly. Do they keep books, are they registered, reciepts etc? Someone must have seen something?

Police need to check out these agencies who post jobs and charge monies for visa + medical. If you need a vist, go the emabssies instead of playing hookie with these questionable emplopyment agencies. Lots of these ship/cruise jobs are used for human trafficking + sex trades. Be careful young people. ACM

While I am not fully blaming the police service for all the murders that have plagued this sweet land, I do hold them responsible for their lack of proper service to the citizens of this country. A great many deaths may have been prevented if the police responded in a timely manner to reports made by concerned family members. Please attempt to do a better job in the future to prevent similar reoccurences. You are here to PROTECT & SERVE, not sit in the police post/station and pass time.

i dont think it is so much being foolish as it is more taking things for granted and thinking nothing go happened to me.People ah begging all ya ,while ah know it hard to be on your guard at ALL times,it is the only way to protect yourself to some degree. One thing can be done is to have posters on all public walls through out t&t just like they doing for the election …after 5/24/10 all ya put up posters adverstising people about safty precautions …in big bold bright writtings adviste people if you about to enter a taxi ..call sombody give tax colour make and drivers description,if ya going in the mall call sombody say where you are and who you going to meet .if you meet that peoson and leave call ,say you leaving …these posters will be a constant reminder to the public and will also be a reminder to the intended perpertrator ..a win win situation if you ask me … please be careful …please

At day 134 we have a known murder toll of 198. A surplus (to the one-a-day requirement for efficiency) of 60. Would anyone accept the following advice? 1/ Small businesses in Trinidad do not fail anyone at any test that would require said business to fork out a $5000 reward. 2/ Office CCTV record at Trinidad Express may hold evidence of the person paying for the placement of the (honey trap) add, else an audit trail from the Express will present evidence of the Debit / Credit card used to place the add. Maybe an answer can be found in the question, ‘how did she fail the test’? Watcher 22 UK

Condolences to the family Posted: 2010-05-14 08:25:00 AM By Job seeker
I would like to extend my condoloences to the family on the death of their family member. This young lade sought to improve her life by getting this job, from the news report that company sounds like it should be investigated, no medical exam or even a visa costs that much money. I hope the police or whatever agency is repsonsible for confirming the legitimacy of these companies checks them out.
Investigate the Firm Posted: 2010-05-14 12:13:00 AM By NKK, Trinidad and Tobago
The police needs to investigate this firm. Who are they to take $5000.00 for a visa. Who are they??? Someone in authority PLEASE investigate these people. Sounds illegal to me.
To conclude, here are some of my questions which I am sure have occurred to most ordinary observers so I am sure the expert investigators have already asked them and are now analysing the answers:
What is the name of the placement agency?
What is the name of the owner of the agency?
Why hasn’t a copy of the ad been reproduced by the newspaper which ran it?
Has anyone else used this agency’s services?
Have other placement agencies been questioned about whether this agency’s demands were suspicious?
What is the name of the clinic where the medical examination was conducted?
What is the name of the doctor who performed the examination?
Have records been found for her appointment?
Did the doctor corroborate the information given by the placement agency? Did Michelle Samaroo really have a medical examination which she failed?
Who told family members that Michelle was seen getting into a taxi? Was she alone? At what time did this occur? In what direction was the taxi travelling?
Why was Michelle Samaroo carrying $5,000.00 in cash? Had the placement agency requested this? Isn’t this method of payment highly irregular when there are safer and more easily traceable methods available?
The fact that a refund was mentioned suggests that she handed over the money before she was examined? What sense does this sequence of events make?
For our enlightenment, I wish the police would explain how releasing details would have endangered the life of Michelle Samaroo. To me it looks like others have been sheltered at her expense.
Which office within the police service investigates complaints about officers’ performance of their duties. Is this office even aware of the many complaints and the tragic outcomes of the callousness of some officers?
I also want to know if the daily newspapers care enough about their readers to print large print scam alerts throughout their classified ads.
It is a possibility that this placement agency had nothing to do with Michelle Samaroo’s abduction and death, but their actions since her disappearance have sent the worst signals to us ordinary members of the public.
It is too late for Michelle Samaroo but I was heartened by the many comments that readers, both at home and abroad, felt moved to submit. It tells me that people still care and that they feel Michelle Samaroo’s loss and her family’s loss as their own. I hope that her family can find some tiny comfort in this display of solidarity but nothing will bring back the life of the young woman they loved.
Peace, always peace.

Hello I’m the sister of the deceased, we appreciate all the kind words and prayers for our family at this time. This had been a terrible ordeal and we hope and pray that another family would not have to go through such a devastating experiance. May God hold who ever is responsible, and protect Trinidad from these SICK perpetrators. God Bless you all thank you.

Dear Nathalia,
Please let your heart be comforted by knowing that people are praying for your family, and we cried for Michelle and felt your pain.
I feel your pain as I have walked in the same shoes last December when my brother was murdered; missing for 7 days and then his body was found…..all due to prayer and the mercy of Jesus Christ.
May the Lord comfort you and your family. And the days when the tears are endless and you feel like life will never be the same again, when it takes an effort to smile, talk, eat and live again, May God wrap you all in His arms of love. And girl, God is a God of Justice, Vengence is mine says the Lord. Hold on to that, prayer for JUSTICE EVERYDAY!!!!!
With much love,
Carmie

Carmie,
Thank you for your words of comfort and for sharing some of what you experienced last year. At times like these, persons like yourself, who have gone through similar experiences, are the ones who can best relate to and provide solace to families and to the victims who have survived. I hope that Nathalia will return to this page and find your message. I know that she will appreciate your prayers and the sincerity with which you are reaching out to her and her family. I wish for you and yours the same blessings which you have extended to Nathalia.
Peace

Nathalia,
Thank you for your comment. I am sure that you must know by know how deeply moved so many people have been by your family’s loss. I have been following this story and I can only imagine a fraction of the anguish and frustration that you and your family must have suffered and are still enduring. I refer not only to the initial and ongoing shocks associated with having a loved one disappear but also the despair of feeling that all the support that you needed was not forthcoming. I only know what the published sources have shared but I admire the initiative and persistence that you and others displayed in the search for your sister, to find answers to your questions and in your attempts to publicise her situation and to enlist support to find her.
I know that all the people who silently said a prayer for your sister and family and those who took the time to voice their concern, sorrow, anger and solidarity would want me to again convey their sincerest condolences to you and your family.
Thank you for visiting and acknowledging (even in the midst of your own grief) their attempts to reach out to you. At some level we have all suffered this loss.
Peace to you and yours.
